Ladakh
High passes, blue lakes, quiet monasteries
Ladakh is a cold high-altitude desert, open to tourists since 1974. Days are spent crossing mountain passes, visiting monasteries and sleeping by lakes like Pangong Tso. Leh sits at about 3,500 m, so the first day is always for rest.
Getting there
Fly into Leh from Delhi, Mumbai or Srinagar. In summer you can also drive in from Srinagar or Manali.
Places to see
Nubra Valley
Reached over Khardung La, with the Hunder sand dunes and Diskit Monastery.
Pangong Tso
A long high-altitude lake whose water shifts from turquoise to deep blue.
Turtuk
A green village near the border with apricot orchards and Balti culture.
When to go
May to June
Roads open, pleasant days, snow still on the passes.
July to August
Peak season. Warm days, all routes open.
September
Fewer crowds and crisp, clear skies.
October to April
Very cold. Many roads close; for experienced travellers only.
