Planning a Kashmir honeymoon in December? See snow odds by week, warm stays, a 5-day plan with a Plan B, and what to pack, from a Srinagar team.

A couple enjoying the snow in Gulmarg

Quick answer: A Kashmir honeymoon in December works well for couples who want snow, quiet and cosy evenings. Expect daytime highs near 10°C in Srinagar, freezing nights, and the best snow in Gulmarg. Plan five days, stay somewhere properly heated, and keep a Plan B for weather. No operator can promise snowfall on a given date.

A Kashmir honeymoon in December gives you snow-dusted meadows, steaming cups of kahwa and long evenings by a wood stove. It also gives you cold nights, closed roads on bad days and one real chance of no snow at all. This guide tells you honestly what to expect, when to go, where to stay and how to plan around the weather.

We are a Srinagar-based team, and we plan winter trips for couples every year. If you already know you want a ready plan, see our Kashmir honeymoon package. If you want to understand the season first, keep reading.

Is December a good time for a Kashmir honeymoon?

Shikaras on Dal Lake on a misty winter morning, Srinagar

Yes, December suits couples who want snow, quiet and cosy stays, but it does not suit couples who want gardens in bloom or easy sightseeing. You trade warm weather for a calmer, more romantic valley.

December suits you if… Pick another month if…
You dream of snow and winter photographs You want flowers and green meadows
You like cosy evenings more than long walks You dislike cold, especially at night
You prefer quiet places to crowds You want every road and viewpoint open
You can stay flexible when weather changes You need a fixed schedule with no changes

If tulips, almond blossom or warm boat rides matter more to you, April to October gives you a gentler trip.

Kashmir weather in December

December is cold in Kashmir: Srinagar averages about 10°C by day and about minus 2°C at night, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam are colder. Those averages hide big swings, so plan for the harsher case.

IMD’s 1991 to 2020 normals put Srinagar’s December average high near 9.9°C and its low near minus 1.6°C, as reported by travel publisher Travel Coffee. Real nights vary a lot, as these two dated examples show.

Place Minimum on 21 Dec 2019 Minimum on 21 Dec 2024
Srinagar −0.4°C −8.5°C
Gulmarg −9.6°C −6.2°C
Pahalgam −3.0°C −8.6°C

Sources: Kashmir Life (21 December 2019) and Greater Kashmir (22 December 2024).

What this tells you: The same date can feel mild one year and brutal the next. In 2024, the Meteorological Department called the Srinagar reading the “third-coldest December night in Srinagar since 1891”. Do not pack for the average. Pack for the cold night.

What is Chillai Kalan?

Chillai Kalan is Kashmir’s 40-day period of harshest winter cold, and it starts on 21 December. Kashmir Life describes it as running from “December 21 and ends on January 31 next year”. The second half of your December trip may fall inside it. Expect colder nights, a higher chance of snow and busier hotels.

Will you see snow in December?

You may see snow, but nobody can promise it, and Gulmarg is your safest bet. Snow timing changes every year, so treat any “guaranteed snow” claim with suspicion.

Place Snow outlook in December What to know
Gulmarg Strongest chance Most reliable for snow walks and sledging
Srinagar Possible, often from mid-December Cold without snow is common
Pahalgam Possible after snowfall Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari may close
Sonamarg Heavy snow, access uncertain Treat as optional

Early December or late December?

Early December is quieter and colder at night with lower snow odds, while late December raises your snow chances but brings more cold and heavy demand. Choose by what matters most to you.

1 to 15 December 16 to 31 December
Snow chances Lower Higher
Crowds Light Heavy around Christmas and New Year
Nights Cold Colder, especially after 21 December
Best for Calm, photography, a slow pace Snow-first couples who book early

What’s open and closed in December

Most major sights stay open in December, but snow and wind can close roads, viewpoints and the Gulmarg Gondola for a day or longer. Always confirm the day before.

Attraction December status Our advice
Dal Lake shikara Usually runs; edges may freeze in the coldest spells Go at sunrise or late afternoon
Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar) Open, but without flowers Visit for quiet walks, not for blooms
Gulmarg Gondola Runs only when weather and safety checks allow Go early, keep the day flexible
Pahalgam viewpoints Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari may close after snow Plan it as a day trip with a Plan B
Sonamarg Road access depends on snow Add only if the road is confirmed open
Tulip Garden Closed; it opens in spring Not part of a December trip

Best places for a December honeymoon

Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam make the best December honeymoon route, and Sonamarg works only as an optional extra. Each place offers a different mood.

  • Srinagar: This is your base. Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and warm cafes give you gentle days. Srinagar sits at about 1,585 metres, so it feels milder than the mountain stops.
  • Gulmarg: This is your snow stop. The meadows turn white, the Gondola climbs above 3,900 metres when it runs, and one night here lets you see the mountains at dawn. Gulmarg sits at about 2,650 metres, so cold hits harder.
  • Pahalgam: This is your quiet, scenic stop. Pine forests and the Lidder River look calm in winter. Road access to some viewpoints can close after snowfall.
  • Sonamarg: This is your optional extra. The road has historically closed for long stretches in winter, so confirm current access before adding it.

Where to stay: houseboat, heated hotel or Gulmarg?

A heated hotel in Srinagar is the safest comfort choice, a houseboat is the most romantic if it is properly heated, and one Gulmarg night is the best upgrade for snow. Mix two of the three for the best trip.

Option Best for Ask before booking
Heated hotel in Srinagar Comfort and reliability Room heater or central heating, hot water hours
Houseboat on Dal Lake Atmosphere and photos Heating, hot water, power backup, any heating charge, in writing
Gulmarg hotel (one night) Snow at your doorstep Heating type, road access, dinner timing

Safety tip: Many winter stays use a bukhari, a wood-burning stove, or a kangri, a traditional fire pot. Ask for proper ventilation and never sleep in a closed room with a burning stove.

Tell us your comfort level and we will suggest the right mix of hotels and houseboats.

5-day December honeymoon itinerary

A five-day, four-night plan covers Srinagar, a Pahalgam day trip and one night in Gulmarg, with a Plan B built into every day. This is the pace we recommend for most couples.

Day Plan Plan B if weather turns
1 Arrive in Srinagar, check in to a heated hotel, rest, evening kahwa on Boulevard Road Stay in; the first evening is for rest
2 Pahalgam day trip (about 2.5 to 3 hours each way), pine forests and river walks Swap to Srinagar sights: Dal Lake, Mughal gardens, old city
3 Drive to Gulmarg (about 2 hours), snow walk, optional Gondola, overnight stay Keep Srinagar as base if the road is closed; try Gulmarg the next day
4 Gulmarg morning, return to Srinagar, shikara at sunset, houseboat or hotel night Skip the shikara and enjoy a long dinner instead
5 Breakfast, shopping for shawls and dry fruit, departure Leave extra buffer for flights

Why this order works: It puts your rest day first, uses the colder mountain nights only once, and keeps Srinagar as a fallback for every weather change.

Romantic things to do in December

The most romantic December experiences in Kashmir are slow ones: a sunrise shikara, a snow walk and a long evening by the fire. Choose two or three, not all of them.

  • Take a sunrise shikara ride on Dal Lake, when mist hangs over the water.
  • Walk in Gulmarg’s snow and try a sledge ride if conditions allow.
  • Ride the Gulmarg Gondola early in the day, when the weather is calmer.
  • Sip kahwa at a lakeside cafe or inside your room.
  • Stroll the Mughal gardens in the quiet afternoon light.
  • Shop for shawls and papier-mâché in Srinagar’s old market.

What to eat and drink

Kashmir’s winter food is warm, rich and made for cold days, and kahwa, noon chai, harissa and wazwan are the dishes to try.

  • Kahwa: A saffron and spice green tea, often served with almonds.
  • Noon chai: A salted pink tea that locals drink all winter.
  • Harissa: A slow-cooked meat dish eaten as a winter breakfast in Srinagar.
  • Wazwan: The traditional multi-course feast. Ask your hotel to arrange one.

What to pack

Pack warm layers, waterproof boots and a power bank, because December mornings and snowy roads are the hardest parts of the trip.

  • Thermal innerwear, fleece, and a heavy jacket
  • Waterproof boots with good grip, plus warm socks
  • Gloves, woollen cap and scarf
  • Moisturiser, lip balm and sunscreen, since snow glare burns skin
  • A power bank, because the cold drains phone batteries fast
  • A small day bag and a flask for hot drinks
  • Photocopies of your IDs and booking details

Travel risks and how to handle them

The main December risks are weather delays, road closures and the cold, and you can handle all three with buffer days and an early start.

  • Flights: Winter weather can delay or cancel flights. Do not book a tight same-day connection on your return.
  • Roads: Snow can close roads for hours or days. Keep Srinagar as your fallback base.
  • Altitude: Gulmarg is high enough to leave some people breathless. Walk slowly, drink water and rest on arrival.
  • Cold: Dress in layers and keep warm drinks handy. Avoid late-night drives.
  • Forecasts: Check the weather forecast on the India Meteorological Department’s Srinagar page in the days before you leave and again the evening before each day trip.

Plan your Kashmir honeymoon in December

Book early if you want late December, choose heating over views, and keep one spare day for weather. Christmas and New Year fill hotels first, so start planning at least a few weeks ahead.

Mistakes to avoid:

  • Booking a houseboat without checking heating in writing
  • Packing for the average temperature, not the cold night
  • Planning Sonamarg as a must-do
  • Stacking Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg into three days with no spare time
  • Expecting guaranteed snow on a fixed date

Frequently asked questions

Is December a good time for a Kashmir honeymoon?

Yes, if you love snow, fireside evenings and quiet. December is cold, and some places close after heavy snow. Couples who want gardens in bloom or easy sightseeing should pick April to October instead. Nobody can guarantee snow on a given date.

Does Srinagar get snow in December?

Sometimes. Snow in Srinagar often arrives from mid-December, but it varies a lot from year to year. Gulmarg is the safer place for snow. Srinagar can feel very cold even on days with no snow, so plan your trip around Gulmarg.

Is Gulmarg open in December?

Yes. Gulmarg is Kashmir’s most reliable snow destination in December, and most couples add at least one night there. Road access depends on snowfall and clearing, so check conditions a day before you travel and keep a Plan B for Srinagar.

Is the Gulmarg Gondola open in December?

It usually runs in winter, but only when weather, safety and technical checks allow. Strong wind or heavy snow can stop it for hours or days. Go early in the day and keep your schedule flexible so one closed morning does not ruin the trip.

Is a houseboat warm enough in December?

It can be, but ask first. Houseboats vary in heating, hot water and power backup. Get written confirmation of these three points and any heating charge before you book. If the weather is severe, a heated hotel in Srinagar is the safer choice.

Is Pahalgam worth visiting in December?

Yes, for the pine forests and quiet river scenery. Snow is not guaranteed, and viewpoints such as Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari may close after fresh snowfall. Treat Pahalgam as a scenic day trip from Srinagar, and keep Gulmarg as your snow stop.

Can couples visit Sonamarg in December?

Possibly, but treat it as optional. Heavy snow has historically cut the Sonamarg road for long stretches in winter, and access depends on the weather. Ask your operator for current road status before you add it, and never build the trip around it.

How cold is Kashmir in December?

Srinagar’s December average is roughly 10°C by day and about minus 2°C at night, based on IMD normals. Real nights can be much colder. On 21 December 2024, Srinagar recorded minus 8.5°C. Pack for the colder case.

How many days do you need for a Kashmir honeymoon in December?

Five days and four nights is a comfortable minimum. It covers Srinagar, a Pahalgam day trip and one night in Gulmarg. Add two days if you want a slower pace, a spare day for weather delays, or Sonamarg when the road is open.

Is early or late December better for a Kashmir honeymoon?

Early December is quieter and colder at night, with softer snow odds. Late December raises your snow chances but brings more cold and heavy demand around Christmas and New Year. Choose early December for calm, and late December for snow.

Final thoughts: is a Kashmir honeymoon in December worth it?

Yes, if you want snow and cosy evenings and you accept the cold and the weather risk. Go with a flexible plan, a heated stay and one night in Gulmarg, and you will get the quiet, romantic Kashmir that most visitors never see.
