Amarnath Yatra Guide: Routes, Registration and Preparation

The Amarnath Yatra is a pilgrimage to the holy cave of Shri Amarnath Ji, high in the mountains of south Kashmir. It takes place for a few weeks each summer, usually in July and August. Exact dates are announced every year by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.

The two routes

Pahalgam route. The traditional, longer route starts from Chandanwari near Pahalgam and passes Sheshnag and Panchtarni. It is gentler in gradient but takes a few days on foot.

Baltal route. The shorter, steeper route starts from Baltal near Sonamarg. Many pilgrims complete it in a single long day up and back.

Ponies, palkis (carried chairs) and, when available, helicopter services operate on both routes.

Registration and health certificate

Every pilgrim must register for the yatra in advance and carry a valid compulsory health certificate from an authorised doctor. Registration opens a few months before the yatra. Always follow the latest official instructions from the Shrine Board, since rules and age limits can change year to year.

How to prepare

• Walk daily for a few weeks before the yatra to build stamina.
• Pack layers. Weather in the mountains changes fast, with cold nights even in summer.
• Carry a raincoat, good walking shoes, a torch, water, dry snacks and personal medicines.
• Keep your registration slip and ID with you at all times.
