Markha Valley Trek (12 Nights and 13 Days)
Day 1: Arive In Delhi
Arrive Delhi, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Afternoon combined tour of old and New Delhi. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Delhi - Leh
Transfer to the Delhi domestic airport for your flight to Leh, the capital of Ladakh . Arrive and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free to relax and acclimatze to the 11,000 feet altitude. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 3: Leh
After morning breakfast visit Shey and Thikse monasteries. Shey
was The summer palace of Ladakhi Kings and is where you wil see the 36 Feet high statue of Buddha, made of copper and covered in gold leaf. The twelve-storeyed monastery of Thikse is situated in the most Prominent of positions, it lies on an island mountain. It has chambers Full of statues, stupas and colourful thangkas. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 4:Leh / Stok
After a free morning in Leh , we drive for an hour by jeep to the
Village of Stok (11,500 feet), starting point of the trek. After visiting the Stok Palace, the residence of the Queen of Ladakh and a very nice museum containing some of the finest thangka (scroll painting) in the world Camp near the village of Stok. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 5: Stok / Stok La 3 hours
This is a tiring but exhilarating day as you walk up a spectacular High barren valley of ever-changing colour and in every directio There is a stunning panorama. Gaint fingers of granite hundreds Of feet long and massive dunes of purple scree contrast with the Deep blue skies of the Tibetan Plateau. The path then steepens And the air thins as you climb towards Stok La (4900 metres). Stopping for breath you can see right back across the Indus Valley into the Karakoram Mountains. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 6: Stok La / Rumbak / Yurutse, 6 hours
After breakfast , a steep climb of about one and a half hours takes us to Rumbak Pass, with its beautiful views. We continue trekking about for two more hours to Rumbak village. Pass the village, cross the river (bridge) and cross an escarpment. Go up the right bank, then the left bank, easy going. Arrive in Yurutse.Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 7: Yurutse / Ganda La / Skiu 6-7 hours
From Yurutse, good path along the mountainside,then cross a small valley and zigzag steeply upto a flat, then go along the mountainside to the Ganda la (4900 metres). Long , easy Descent towards Shingo (4 ½ hours) , then into splendid gorges. serval easy fords. After a 2 hours descent arive in the valley of Markha. Turn to the left (east) then a few hundred metres further to Skiu. Diner and overnight in tents.
Day 8: Skiu / Markha, 7 hours
From Skiu, good path on the right bank of the Markha. A great deal of vegetation. Then on the left bank (bridge) and arive in Shalak (a few houses). Go to the river, cross it and walk along the Left bank. Another crossing, then short climb towards Markha. Campsite near the river side. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 9: Markha / Tchatchutse , 6 hours
Passing old water mils, you come into a wide open valley where again you ford the river (or be prepared to take the perilously slippery route on the scree slope above). After an hour a little Monastery of Humlung appears above you, perched 500 feet up on Needle of rock. It is usually closed, though worth the climb just for The magnificent view. You stop for lunch in Hankar, the last year- Round settlement in the Markha Valley. A ruined fort dominates the Village from one side and on the other side the horizon is filled by The 6400 metres Kang Yatze, which is where you are heading. The path Gets steeper above Hanker and you walk for only two hours before Setting camp at Thactchutse. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 10: Tchatchutse / Nimaling 3 hours
You will find that the walking becomes more dificult as you gain altitude, but you may find this to be the most beautiful day of the whole trip as you make your way towards the head of the valley. For Much of the time, the horseshoe of Kang Yatze rises abon unbelieveably close and the more you climb, the better the view into Zanaskar and beyond. This really is the roof of the world. Passing an icy cold glacial lake reflecting the snowy peaks above, you arrive at Nimaling (4700 metres) by lunch time. This is the shepherds summer camp for the whole Markha Valley and is literally “the meadow of the sun’ very few places in the entire world have the wild beauty of Nimaling. It is a lost world of its own and tranquil beyond words. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 11: Nimaling / Kongmaru- La / Shang , 8 hours
Leaving Nimaling in the early morning and crossing the Markha
River for the last time , you head up towards the Kongmaru - la Pass. This is the highest point of the trek at 5150 metres but you are acclimatized by now and if anyone does have problems it will be possible to ride a horse over the pass. Serval easy fords. Leave the gorges and keep walking on the left bank to Chukirmo. Then sometimes in the riverbed, right bank, and again on left bank. Arive in Shang small gompa one hour away from the village. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 12: Shang / Hemis , 3 - 4 hours
You wil have an easy walk back to Indus Valley where your trek ends. A private vehicle takes you thirty minutes or so to Hemis Gompa, the biggest and most important monastery in Ladakh. After lunch at the monastery, you return to your hotel in Leh. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.
Day 13: Leh - Delhi - Onward
After breakfast assistance for departure and transfer to airport for flight to Delhi. On arrival you are met and transferred to your hotel. In the evening transfer to the international airport for your onward flight.
